Evolving Sample Interview Skills
Selling yourself can be harder than it sounds. Too much confidence is dislikeable and not enough confidence affects your credibility because you seem unsure. Presenting the wow factor modestly is a little like asking a car salesman for a big - small car. We often see sample interview questions, but what about an entire sample interview? If your flatmate or parent asked you some thought provoking sample interview questions and then assessed your response how do you think you would go? What feedback would they provide?
What if they asked the same sample interview questions a second time? I bet that just like your bike riding your responses would improve. You may be a little wobbly at this stage but the training wheels are off and you"re up and running.
Consider now that you asked a different family member to run you through the same sample interview. You deliver your new and improved responses. Your speech is more fluent and you are more confident about what you need to say. Your family member provides their feedback and the learning process continues.
Lets take this experiment to another level. Suppose you find yet another family member or friend. You hand them the same sample interview questions and you have them assess your responses. Thinking back to the bike analogy, I bet that you"re up and running fluently by now. Are you good enough to impress them? What would they say if you asked ð€“ "so would you hire me after this interview?"
Just like the real thing, different aspects of your response will impress different family members or friends. It is important to learn to read their reactions so that you can align your answer more closely to their likes and dislikes. Reading body language and prompting your interviewer for feedback subtly are important aspects of your skills development. The more people that help you to practice the better because of the variety of personalities that you are exposed to.
As with all things in life interview skills involve progressive development. We often train to improve our bodies, study to improve our minds and have fun to improve our moods. Nothing comes naturally, no matter how well you know your subject matter your interview delivery can always be improved.
Last but not least, don"t take your sample interview feedback to heart. If the feedback is negative you may reflect on the expressed opinion but you do not necessarily have to agree with it. Stay on track with your sample interview practice and you will surely reap the rewards.
