College Soccer: a Few Notes
The celebrated English School, Eton College, established a set of rules for the game in 1815. Soon other schools, colleges and Universities began to use the Eton rules. Later, these were collected and regulated, until a version, which became known as the Cambridge Rules, was adopted by majority of England"s Universities and Colleges that participated in the sport. The game, however, ran into another conflict. It became divided into two separate camps: some colleges preferred to follow rules that closely followed the game of Rugby. These rules permitted tripping, shin-kicking and carrying the ball; all of which were forbidden under the Cambridge policy.
Thus, on 26 October 1863, eleven London clubs and schools sent representatives to a meeting which was held in Freemason"s Tavern. The purpose of the meeting was to establish a single set of essential laws to govern the matches which they played. This meeting produced the Football Association. Eventually, the supporters of the Rugby rules walked out.
